Mali is in the spotlight at the Fondation Cartier in 2017. The museum invites visitors to contemplate the works of photographer Malick Sidibé in a retrospective running from October 20, 2017 to February 25, 2018. The exhibition is a tribute to the artist, who died a year earlier.
The retrospective features a large collection of vintage images and portraits that the photographer may have taken throughout his career, and which have been found in his personal archives. The idea is to bring to light, through the artist's eye, the vitality of Bamako's youth in the 60s. It's also a way of discovering the artist's life through these black-and-white shots, and his involvement in Bamako's cultural and social life.
In all, over 250 photos are presented, some of which have never before been shown to the public. The exhibition is divided into two parts: on the one hand, the Bamako parties, showing young people dancing as couples to the sound of 60s rock or twist, and on the other, the portraits and their diversity, very present in the artist's life and which he executed in his studio.
It's a wonderful exhibition that's sure to make you want to travel!
