The Maison de Victor Hugo is due to reopen its doors in November 2020, after more than a year's work. For the occasion, the museum should have offered us a plunge into the world of Victor Hugo and revealed a little-known facet of the artist. Entitled Victor Hugo Dessins: dans l'intimité du génie, theexhibition highlights his talents as a draughtsman. From June 10 to November 21, 2021, we'll be visiting the famous writer's home to discover the full extent of his talents.
The exhibition Dans l'intimité du génie features landscapes, satirical drawings and caricatures that reflect the personality of their author: Victor Hugo was a politically committed man and an artist capable of imagining superb, dreamlike worlds. This is an opportunity for us to discover the author's inner life, to better understand this key figure in French culture.
Victor Hugo as a writer goes without saying. Victor Hugo as a draughtsman is more unexpected. The artist never made his pictorial works available to the general public. He preferred to keep his drawings for his family and friends, when he didn't keep them just for himself. The Maison de Victor Hugo lifts the veil on the writer's graphic work, and presents a very rich and diverse collection.
The works on display represent different periods of the artist's life, and show the great moments of his existence - and above all, the important people who shared his life. His friends, his son-in-law, his daughter Léopoldine, his grandchildren, his beloved mistress Juliette Drouet... Victor Hugo let himself be inspired by the people he loved to produce drawings of remarkable finesse and beauty.
We also discover numerous paintings and drawings by friends and companions, sometimes inspired by Victor Hugo's literary works.
The exhibition is all the more interesting given the fragility of Victor Hugo's drawings. The works of this self-taught artist are easily destroyed, making them increasingly rare. Come and see the exhibition at the Maison de Victor Hugo, to keep a lasting souvenir of the writer's many talents.
