Women in all their diversity through the prism of photography... On the occasion ofAustralia Now, theAustralian Embassy invites art lovers to discover the latest exhibition by photographer Petrina Hicks, entitled Bleached Gothic, from June 14 to September 2021. A retrospective that brings together works produced between 2003 and 2019, conveying the ambiguity and complexity inherent in the female experience.
At a time when questions of gender and representation are more culturally relevant than ever, Petrina Hicks ' photographs interrogate the cultural and visual representation of women and children in contemporary society and throughout history.
Over the course of her fifteen-year career, the Sydney-based artist has built a solid reputation for large-scale, hyper-realistic photographs that subvert and disrupt the photographic language of portraiture. Petrina Hicks photographs children, animals and young women against simple backgrounds, frequently returning to the same models and motifs to define and refine her distinctive style.
Her photographs are distinguished by their duality. Pristine and benign at first glance, the works are tainted by a sense of the strange and surreal. The tension between seduction and danger, familiarity and strangeness, intimacy and distance is present in many of the photographer's works, rich in mythological and historical symbolism.
