As part ofAustralia Now 2021, an Australian government initiative celebrating Australian creative excellence, diversity and innovation, the Palais de Tokyo is hosting an exhibition of the work of artist Jonathan Jones from November 26, 2021 to February 20, 2022. Entitled untitled (transcriptions of country), the exhibition focuses on"the colonial transport, trade and acclimatization of indigenous plants, animals and artefacts, and the indigenous knowledge associated with them".
The starting point is Captain Nicolas Baudin 's French expedition to the Southern Territories in the early 19th century. "Imagining his works as a process of translation", the artist uses this historical event to build his project, consisting of works in different formats, each with its own particularity.
Among the most emblematic works exhibited for the occasion are the 300 plants, preserved in theNational Herbarium of the Museum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris, reproduced in embroidery and handmade by local communities. There are also sculptures based on traditional indigenous objects now lost. Then there's a"soundscape", inspired by a corroboree - an Australian Aboriginal ceremony - as transcribed during the expedition, and broadcast into space.
The idea behind these multiple formats is to highlight"the way in which the interpretation and understanding of other cultures can be modified through communication and exchange". It should also be noted that the exhibition will then be presented in Australia, at the Artspace contemporary art center in Sydney, and will be the subject of a specific publication.
