Charles Ray and his disturbing sculptures renewing art are coming to France from February 16 to June 20, 2022. Centre Pompidou hosts an extraordinary exhibition called Charles Ray, a dialog between the museum and the creator including – at the very core of these exchanges – works created to blow people away and make us think about what sculpture is.
In this exhibition, the Beaubourg museum has gathered works symbolizing the artist’s thoughts and evolutions, sculptures illustrating his process and research. Created as a stroll, this exhibition is also a landscape one is invited to inhabit through the mind and body.
Charles Ray has created about a hundred pieces all along his career. A limited catalog in comparison with some of his peers, but a catalog full of delicate works of art and stories behind each of them.
The American artist spent a lot of time studying the history of sculptural art, from the archaic Greek sculptures to the creations of his peers. This knowledge can be seen in the items displayed at Centre Pompidou. Visitors are faced with monumental works: from the first glance, they enter a complex universe, a rich and innovative work.
The Charles Ray exhibition invites us to (re)discover 50 years of creation, 50 years of career marked by living or fixed sculptures, work techniques that enable to revolutionize the sculptural art and express new emotions through matter.
Dive into Charles Ray’s universe thanks to the Centre Pompidou exhibition and extend your journey to the Bourse de Commerce dedicating an exhibition to the sculptor at the same time.
