Attention art lovers! The Petit Palais invites the curious to discover its latest exhibition, Giovanni Boldini, Le Plaisirs et les jours, from March 29 to July 24, 2022. A major retrospective of works by the Italian artist, whose last exhibition in France was over 60 years ago.
Giovanni Boldini was a virtuoso portraitist, close to Degas and Proust, and one of the greatest glories of early 20th-century Paris, who knew how to pose as an attentive observer of the high society of the time, which he admired and frequented. The exhibition retraces these observations in a chronologically thematic way, from his training in Italy to his long career in Paris. The retrospective also highlights"Boldini's links with the society of his time, fashion and luxury, celebrities and European aristocracy, models and mistresses, artists and writers".
A total of 150 works are presented to visitors, including paintings, drawings, prints, costumes and fashion accessories on loan from museums around the world, as well as from private collectors. The idea? To relive the pleasures of the Belle Époque, as well as"the effervescence of a capital at the cutting edge of modernity", through the worldly portraits he produced, in an inimitable, modern style, but at odds with the avant-garde, true"captivating and moving testimonies of this lost Paris". Mark your calendars, folks!
