The exhibition DETCHKO OUZOUNOV. CARNETS DE VOAYGE features 75 watercolors, drawings and sketches by the great Bulgarian artist, created during his travels in Europe, Asia, North America and Bulgaria.
The vernissage will take place on September 20 from 6.30pm at the Galerie de l'Institut.
Detchko Ouzounov was born in Bulgaria on February 22, 1899. A portrait painter and master of monumental arts, renowned for his landscapes, still lifes and nudes, he is also appreciated as an illustrator and scenographer.
Success followed the artist from his first exhibition in 1925 until his death in 1986. Uzunov's career was not linear. It was marked by various artistic decisions that took him out of a precise framework. He followed several parallel lines of research, experimenting with different ideas, forms, techniques, colors and compositions.
Detchko Ouzounov unleashes his creative energy on the basis of a solid training at the Sofia Academy of Fine Arts and the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. He has taken part in several exhibitions around the world.
His works, imbued with these travels, bring an intellectual finesse and subtlety to the Bulgarian art scene. The places he visits and the new cultures he discovers inspire and enrich the artist's account of nature and the surrounding space. A keen observer of the world around him, Detchko Ouzounov remains sensitive to its beauties, which he explores in his works with finesse and romanticism.
These " travel diaries " are a shared experience, a memory and a testimony to the time spent and the roads travelled.
The event is organized in partnership with the Sofia City Art Gallery to mark the 125th anniversary of Detchko Uzunov's birth.
The exhibition can be visited from September 20 to October 18, 2024 at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute Gallery.
