The Palais de Tokyo invites you to discover an exhibition of works by Barbara Chase-Riboud, sculptor, poet and novelist, entitled Quand un nœud est délié, un dieu est libéré, from October 17, 2024 to January 5, 2025. The exhibition features the latest creations by this leading figure in contemporary art, with works combining abstraction and figuration. It's an opportunity to plunge into the poetic and committed universe of this artist, who is still too little known in France.
Barbara Chase-Riboud, who has lived and worked in Paris since 1961, has always drawn on the history of the African diaspora and the civil rights struggles in the United States to nourish her creations. Subtle references, never directly illustrative, permeate her work, as evidenced by her bronzes from the Standing Black Woman of Venice series or her works on paper embroidered with white threads, delicate evocations of her literary work. Through this exhibition, the artist continues to explore profound themes, paying homage to such emblematic figures as Malcolm X and Josephine Baker.
The exhibition is part of a collective, nationwide project involving seven prestigious Parisian institutions, including the Centre Pompidou, Musée du Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, Musée Guimet, Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, Palais de la Porte Dorée, Cité de la Musique and Philharmonie de Paris. It provides a better understanding of Barbara Chase-Riboud's multi-faceted work, which is both rooted in history and looking to the future. A listening area dedicated to her literary works will add an immersive dimension to this retrospective, allowing visitors to grasp the full richness of her approach.
Barbara Chase-Riboud, born in Philadelphia in 1939, has left her mark on the international art scene. From her first bronze sculptures created in Rome in the 1950s to works exhibited in the world's leading museums, she has established herself as a major figure in contemporary art. All the more reason to discover her work at the Palais de Tokyo.
