He is considered one of the pioneers of "pure photography": a movement that values photography that is as realistic and objective as possible, in order to represent the world as it is, not as the artist wants to show it. Paul Strand is the focus of theexhibition organized by the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, from February 14 to April 23, 2023.
The American artist is well known for his work as a photographer. Documentary tool, art, political force: Paul Strand has made photography his passion and his profession. Nearly 120 photographs trace his career and his commitments. The exhibition Paul Strand or the Balance of Power allows us to (re)discover a fascinating artist who immortalized the major issues of his time.
As a teenager, Paul Strand discovered the power of photography and decided to devote his life to it. In the 1910's, the young American first focused on capturing the faces and scenes of life in New York.
After a trip to Mexico, and one to Moscow during the interwar period, Paul Strand became more involved in politics, notably by becoming a member of the American Labor Party. These activities were very much frowned upon in the United States, during this tense period when any opinion that was a little too popular was seen as an "anti-American" attack. The artist therefore decided to fly to France, from where he continued his work and his travels.
Through each trip, Paul Strand tries to tell the real life of people: humble people, affected by wars, bad weather, diseases, oppressive regimes... The artist highlights those who fight for their freedom, for their happiness. Touching stories, which give all their power to these photographs.
Art and documentary research, social and political involvement and the desire to remain objective: these ambivalences bring great strength to Paul Strand's work. It is these opposing imperatives that make his photographs so interesting, so exciting for us as viewers.
Paul Strand offers us a unique look at this eventful 20th century, at the countries he visited, at the different populations he met. The passion of the photographer is felt through these pictures, which we invite you to admire without delay at the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation.
