What do fashion and sport, two worlds so different on paper, have in common? This is what the Musée des Arts Décoratifs will attempt to explore from September 20, 2023 to April 7, 2024, in conjunction with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. What better opportunity than one of the capital's finest events to discover a selection of objects related to sport, from Antiquity to the present day?
Visitors will be able to observe the astonishing links between the history of fashion and sport, thanks to garments, accessories, posters and videos, which allow visitors to reflect on the body over the centuries. Where does the famous Tour de France yellow jersey come from? How did the Lacoste polo shirt come into being? Did you know that in the 19th century, there were cumbersome dresses for playing tennis? Nowadays, sportswear such as sneakers and jogging suits have become part of everyday life, but in other eras they were used exclusively for sporting purposes.
The exhibition also highlights the emergence of sportswear from the 1920s onwards, as well as the fashion designers who, in the interwar period, offered elegant haute-couture pieces adapted to sportswear, such as Chanel, Lanvin and Schiaparelli. Today, the number of collaborations between major brands and the world of sport is on the rise, with top sportsmen and women becoming their muses!
