An exhibition that transports us to the animal kingdom! For this installation, on view until March 10, 2024, the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature has invited the talented painter Sean Landers. Born in 1962, Sean Landers is considered one of the great exponents of American contemporary art, a key figure in figurative painting and a true conceptual artist, blending hyperrealism, the absurd, narrative art, trompe-l'œil and make-believe, all tinged with humor and melancholy and underpinned by an undeniable technicality.
The Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature's " Animal Kingdom " exhibition is an opportunity to discover the captivating world of Sean Landers and his many works, including his animal portraits, which are as fascinating as they are disturbing. Visitors will be able to move around the museum as part of an itinerary that unfolds throughout the Parisian cultural venue, creating a genuine dialogue between Sean Landers ' contemporary works and the permanent collections of the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature.
The Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature's temporary exhibition room, for example, features the artist's famous series of tartan-furred animals, which he has been creating for over ten years. In 2005, Sean Landers created his first tartan animal, a trompe-l'oeil inspired by René Magritte's "cow period".
Each tartan animal in this series is placed in the heart of its respective habitat, against a backdrop of iconic American landscapes and mythical national parks.
Upstairs, we discover an anthology of works testifying to the richness of his inspiration: a forest of birch trees with trunks engraved with messages, sublime animal portraits such as that of a labrador with anthropomorphic expressions, a trompe-l'œil library with a snow globe containing a jaguar in the middle, not forgetting"Plankboy", a gimmick in Landers' work, a bit like Gepetto and his Pinocchio. A true avatar of the artist, this"Plankboy" is a character made of planks, quite different from his tartan animals. Two animal portraits have also been specially created for this exhibition at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature.
The museum is also exhibiting two incredible bronze sculptures by the artist: two truculent characters with disconcerting and extraordinary figures, on the borderline between the real and the fantastic.
With some thirty works - mainly held in private collections - to be admired for around 5 months in Paris, the highly diversified " Animal Kingdom " exhibition raises questions about the place of animals and their future, but also about the durability of nature, while taking a look at European art.
The installation also marks Sean Landers ' return to France, following his retrospective at the Consortium de Dijon in 2020. Last but not least, this event is an opportunity for the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature to showcase new, singular figures in contemporary art, once again emphasizing the dialogue between Man and Nature.
Visit the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature until March 10, 2024, to admire this exhibition devoted to the sublime contemporary works of Sean Landers.
