In the run-up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the equestrian events to be held in Versailles, Yvelines, many museums are offering exhibitions on the theme of the horse. An animal close to humans, used throughout history as a means of transport, aristocratic entertainment, a military element or even in the artistic field. At the Domaine royal de Marly, horses played an important role from Louis XIV to the French Revolution, as explored in an exhibition running from June 7 to November 3, 2024.
Extending from the museum's interior spaces to the park, the exhibition traces Marly's rich equestrian history and highlights the imprint left by the horse on this royal hunting lodge and setting for the monumental Chevaux de Marly. Through some one hundred paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings, accessories and archival documents, the general public will be able to observe the extent to which the horse became a tool for demonstrating monarchical power.
Visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a royal hunt, discover the impact of the horse in the reorganization of the estate to facilitate circulation in the woods, admire theAbreuvoir de Marly (Marly drinking trough ) from the stables commissioned by Marie-Antoinette and learn about the history of the sculpture of the"Chevaux de Marly", commissioned from the sculptor Coustou, which traveled throughout the capital, a true example ofequestrian art under the reign of Louis XV.
