Ready for a dream getaway? Pack your bags, Christie's is taking you on an ultra-chic journey with afree exhibition of the largest private collection of Louis Vuitton trunks ever unveiled! From June 19 to 24, 2024, head to the prestigious Maison de Ventes on Avenue Matignon to discover "Legendary Trunks: A European Private Collection" and its 100 models of iconic travel trunks, at the heart of a dedicated scenography.
For almost two centuries, every LV trunk has told an amazing story. It all began in 1858, when the company, which moved to Paris 4 years ago, revolutionized the art of travel with its flat, stackable, super-strong trunks. From the days of Louis Vuitton to the bold creations of Virgil Abloh, these trunks illustrate the exceptional know-how handed down through five generations of craftsmen.
Over the years, materials and design have evolved along with the needs of customers in search of practicality. This fashion exhibition will unveil a copper Malle Armoire from 1900, ready to brave the elements - heat, humidity, water - on long journeys. Or the legendary Malle Idéale in cowhide, a veritable accessories dressing room with compartments for shoes, hats and scarves. The 1920s-1930s Malle Bureau, known as the Malle Stokowski, designed for the eponymous conductor's work and travel needs, with compartments for stationery, a folding table and sealed by a central lock, will also be on display during strolling.
From stripes and checkerboards to Monogram canvas in 1896 and Virgil Abloh's vitaminized version in 2021, Louis Vuitton's constant innovation is perpetuated by the artistic directors who have marked the history of the House.
Among the other treasures on display, discover collaborations and special editions such as an alligator trunk containing a caviar set with shot glasses, or a Monogram canvas trunk, a luxurious case for a birthday cake, with integrated knife and forks. Admire also the Croquet trunk from 2004, equipped for a croquet game for 8 players, and, further on, the Hemingway Library trunk from 1927, with its drawers and space for a typewriter, ideal for traveling writers like Ernest Hemingway.
Also explore special orders such as the Albert KahnMail Trunk, the philanthropic adventurer and traveler, or the 1920 Lily Pons Shoe Trunk, named after the famous Franco-American singer, capable of holding 36 pairs of shoes.
