An artist seen by an artist... The Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris is organizing a major retrospective dedicated to the sculptor Hans Josephsohn. To tell the story of this artist's career and world, the museum has chosen Albert Oehlen as artistic curator. A long-time admirer of Josephsohn, Albert Oehlen offers a unique perspective on the artist and his rich career.
Over the decades, Hans Josephsohn has developed a unique language and style, which makes his sculptures truly singular. Inspired by the women in his life and the great international artists, there are many references in his creations.
The exhibition focuses on three specific periods, each distinguished by its special artistic output. In his early years, Josephsohn was interested in forms and their essence. He experimented with lines and geometry.
A few decades later, Josephsohn developed a passion for bodies, their shapes and mass. His sculptures became less abstract, more expressive. Gestures, movements and lines are more straightforward. The female body is often explored in these creations.
The retrospective then takes an abrupt turn: after these figurative phases, it's time forabstraction. Bodies blurred, lines changed. Josephsohn perfected his gestures, and rediscovered earlier inspirations. Works from this period are often compared to prehistoric Venuses.
Through this exhibition, curator Albert Oehlen has sought to explore the sculptor's creative process, his relationship with matter and reality, to highlight the importance of this artist in the world of sculpture. The exhibition aims to show Josephsohn'slegacy in modern sculpture, through more contemporary works .
