The Musée Guimet takes us back to the China of the Tang Empire, to discover its rich capital, Chang'an. From November 20, 2024 to March 3, 2025.

The Musée Guimet continues to introduce us to the treasures and history of China: for its new exhibition, the museum takes us on a journey to the Tang Empire, between the years 618 and 907. Come and visit Chang'an, the resplendent capital of the Tang Empire, from November 20, 2024 to March 3, 2025.

Merchants, poets, musicians, politicians, aristocrats, artists and travelers meet in this great city, the beating heart of the rich Tang empire. Amidst temples, markets, monasteries and stores, over one and a half million people lived in this imperial city. It was the most populous city in the world at the time!

Chang'an ("Long Peace") is a symbol of the evolution of Asia in those days. A multicultural city, where foreign beliefs and religions are tolerated. A rich, prosperous city, a center of arts and culture.

Numerous works of art, paintings and calligraphy, as well as recent archaeological finds, tell the story of this city and the life that inhabited it. Some works, shown for the first time in the West, testify to the importance of the Tang dynasty and its period of opulence.

Chang'an was home to the Tang imperial palace, three times larger than the Forbidden City of the Ming dynasty. The Tang dynasty enjoyed a wealth of riches that contributed to its power. Chang'an was at the crossroads of the Silk Roads, and welcomed merchants from all over the world... With their wares. Precious stones, pottery, spices... Markets fostered cultural exchange and collaboration between neighboring civilizations.

The Musée Guimet's exhibition brings to life this splendid period, through the arts and testimonies of the past, depicting all the wonders of this vanished capital.
