If you have ever traveled in Eastern Europe - Budapest, Prague, Bucharest... - you have surely noticed or even tasted these delicious chimney-shaped desserts: called Kurtoscalacs, Chimney Cakes for English speakers, these spit cakes are surprisingly simple and yet, their texture, their shape... are unique. In the capital, it is at LOLILOL that you can taste them.
In reality, it is a brioche dough, rolled out on a cone, rolled in sugar, then put in the oven. When the cake comes out of the oven, it is soft on the inside, caramelized on the outside and then rolled again in the topping of your choice: homemade vanilla sugar (with real Madagascar vanilla beans), cinnamon sugar, colored vermicelli, pistachio powder, ground hazelnuts...
The most greedy will opt for a Chimney Cake in the shape of a cone, a shape studied to fill the cake with vanilla ice cream, strawberry sorbet or yogurt ice cream. There is also the option of the original Chimney Cake (in the shape of a chimney), with a gourmet and vegan topping to accompany it: hazelnut spread, pistachio spread, dark chocolate spread, Crete honey, apricot jam... All the spreads are vegan, without palm oil and made in Italy, or you can spice up your spit cake with a delicious honey from Crete, the favorite product of the store's managers, which they themselves found in Crete.
For the options, you can ask for a vegan Chimney Cake, for 1 € more and, of course, when you take a toppings supplement (2 € in addition to the cake), you can taste them all: pistachio, caramel, spread... We warned you: here, greed is king and it's the ideal snack for the whole family, summer and winter.
Behind the counter, it is Pierre and Kosta that we meet: the first one is Parisian of origin, the second one has Cretan origins, both grew up in Paris so, it is without surprise that LOLILOL is, finally, in the image of its two partners. They discovered this cake during a trip to Budapest, so they decided to import the concept to Crete, where they have a seasonal store, before opening this one in Paris. In addition to offering their spit cakes, they created a savory version, with cheese, sauce or sausage, for the Hot Dog recipe, tomato sauce and olives for the pizza recipe...
No two spit cakes that come out of LOLILOL 's oven are alike: and that's what we love about the concept too. "When you create a cake especially for the person, it's completely different from offering cakes that are all ready-made and packaged," explains Kosta. Whether you want to enjoy a personalized snack, have a gourmet lunch on the go or discover a dessert that is a change from French pastries: whatever your excuse, go and try these spit cakes that you don't see much in Paris!
