It is in the rue des Blancs Manteaux, in the heart of the Marais, that Julien Agobert invites us for dinner. On the menu? The discovery of Monjul, the very first restaurant of the chef, which opened eleven years ago.
At first glance, nothing suggests theexplosion of flavors that we will find in the plate. In the middle of a simple but warm décor, with its little candle lights and its plants that let their leaves tumble from the ceiling, we are welcomed with a frank smile.
After a revisited Spritz (the Monspritz, with Campari, Suze, champagne and Martini rosato) accompanied by colorful appetizers, we opt for the tasting menu (55€) for a nice overview of Monjul's cuisine.
2 starters, 2 main courses, 2 desserts (in reduced portions, don't panic) with each time incredible marriages of flavors: cannelloni with matcha tea filled with chard and wasabi cream, poached egg with a fresh cream mousse and Jerusalem artichoke, seasonal vegetables in fritters (in this case green asparagus and broccoli) and risotto with arugula pesto, cod back perfectly cooked and accompanied by a spinach and fennel soup To finish, a dessert with chocolate in all its forms with a special mention for the crispy feuilletine and, what we are assured is "the best dessert in the world" (yes, just that): a very girly meringue globe under which hides a delicious rose cream, matcha tea ice cream and lychee, all comfortably seated on a rice pudding
Sophisticated without being pompous, Monjul surprises us with its warm simplicity that only enhances the finesse of its cuisine. A must try!
