Paintings, sculptures, archaeological objects, modern art objects... A very rich collection held by the Marquis Campana and built up between 1830 and 1850, which the Musée du Louvre has undertaken to present in an exceptional exhibition from November 6, 2018 to January 26, 2019, entitled Un rêve d'Italie.
The idea: to give " a complete picture of the largest private collection of the 19th century" for the first time in 160 years. A collection that has never before been presented to the public in its entirety and in the same place, the works having been scattered all over Europe (but especially in France). The collection comprises over 10,000 pieces, including masterpieces such as Paolo Uccello's The Battle of San Romano, already on display at the Louvre, and the Sarcophagus of the Spouses, a work belonging to the museum's Department of Greek and Etruscan Antiquities.
It's a way of discovering the personality of Giampietro Campana, an Italian aristocrat and marquis in his own right, as well as the way in which he assembled all his works, his taste for art and the dispersal of the collection throughout Europe.
The exhibition also aims to show " the importance of this collection in Italian and European cultural consciousness ", with a tour highlighting " the founding moment that the Campana collection represents in the affirmation of Italian culture " and in the context of the emergence of Italy as a united nation during the Risorgimento (unification of the country).
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
