The art of Italian drawing in all its splendor... From June 27 to September 30, 2019, the Musée du Louvre presents an exhibition based on the Mariette collection. And after French drawings in 2011, it's the turn of Italian drawings and the great masters of Italian painting to be honored through a unique retrospective.
The last representative"of an illustrious dynasty of print dealers", admitted as a "free associate" to theAcadémie royale de peinture et de sculpture, Pierre-Jean Mariette distinguished himself in many artistic disciplines: engraver, draughtsman, translator, art critic, writer... But he is best known as a collector. A universal collection"summarizing as perfectly as possible the history of drawing", accumulating drawings by the great names in painting.
In all, some sixty sheets from his own collection are presented to visitors, with the aim of enabling drawing enthusiasts to fully appreciate the part of the Mariette collection"that most reflected the pleasure and pride of its creator". Raphael, Michelangelo, Veronese, Guerchino, Titian, Reni, Carracci... So many great artists of Italian painting to discover in a new light. Shall we go, friends?
