When prehistory and modern art meet... A wacky crossroads that the Centre Pompidou is highlighting in an exhibition, Prehistory, a modern invention, from May 8 to September 16, 2019. This retrospective revisits"the fertile relationship between prehistory and modern and contemporary art" through works by artists such as Picasso, Miró, Giacometti, Penone, Ernst, Klein, Klee, Cezanne, Dubuffet and many others.
Built up in the 18th century, the notion of Prehistory is"resolutely modern", at once a"historical, anthropological and artistic concept". This notion was affirmed at the beginning of the 20th century, with"the specific recognition of cave art", which subsequently became an object of fascination as well as a model for diverse and varied artistic experiments.
The exhibition highlights"the attraction of artists and society" to "prehistoric art" and its"fantasized origins". A chronological tour traces the evolution of this art from the turn of the 20th century to the present day. Beyond the tour, a unique scenography brings together"modern works with iconic pieces from the Paleolithic and Neolithic eras". Back to the past, folks?
