For some, September marks the return of the metro, work and sleep routine. But fortunately, there are some events that break the routine by offering us new experiences. For enthusiasts and the curious, September also marks the return of one of Europe's must-see cultural events: the Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days). This initiative invites us to discover our treasures from a new angle, through a program of visits, events and workshops at the heart of our most beautiful monuments.
In Paris and the Île-de-France region, a wide range of establishments are getting in on the act: museums, churches, châteaux, libraries and even places closed to the public. The program is often free, inviting us to enjoy a unique experience enriched by exceptional tours and activities for young and old alike. It's the perfect opportunity to discover new places to visit in the Paris region.

Heritage Days 2024 at the Carré des Coignard in Nogent-sur-Marne
Vincent Villette, Director of the Musée Intercommunal de Nogent-sur-Marne, presents the Claude Delaunay collection, a veritable journey through the Nogent and Vincennes of the 1970s.
Claude Delaunay (1915-2000) was a painter and illustrator of Vendée origin. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes and at the Arts Décoratifs. Sent to the front, he spent 5 years imprisoned in Bavaria. After the Liberation, Claude Delaunay became a drawing teacher in Saint-Maixent.
After two years teaching in Vendée, he became artistic director of Coty perfumes for several years. He then worked as an art teacher in the Paris region until his retirement, particularly in Nogent-sur-Marne, where he lived with his wife Sonia, also an art teacher. In parallel with his new professional activity, he illustrated a number of books.
In 1979, before retiring to the Vendée, Claude Delaunay donated to the Musée de Nogent-sur-Marne a series of 134 gouaches, mainly produced between 1970 and 1971, depicting Nogent: its streets, parks, monuments and construction sites. Delaunay provides an exceptional record of a suburban commune in the making, with its new buildings, the arrival of the RER...
In 2023, his son Christian donated other works produced in the 1960s and 1970s to the Musée intercommunal. They show the banks of the Marne and the Paris suburbs (Joinville, Le Perreux, Saint-Maur, Bry and Nogent-sur-Marne). The Bois de Vincennes was a favorite: he was there almost every day in the sixties. Delaunay loved nature and trees. He produced 160 gouaches for the exhibition Du bois de Vincennes aux rives de la Seine presented at the Parc Floral (1975).
The exhibition at the Carré des Coignard represents a selection of 80 works donated by Claude and Christian Delaunay.
Heritage Days 2024 at the Smith Lesouef municipal library in Nogent-sur-Marne
Born from the union of two 17th-century French gardens, the park of the Fondation des Artistes in Nogent-sur-Marne was shaped between 1860 and 1940 by the Smith family. Transformed into an English garden, this large estate was a major source of inspiration for the Smith sisters. The park was the source of numerous drawings and paintings by painter Madeleine Smith-Champion, as well as hundreds of photographs taken by Jeanne Smith. The garden, classified as one of France's first picturesque sites in 1909, was bequeathed to create a philanthropic foundation in 1944. The talk, given by the Fondation des Artistes' collections manager, will describe the park's historical development and the close links it has maintained with the artists who created it, or who continue to live in it and draw inspiration from it.
A self-guided tour of the building, which opened its doors to the public in 1919 as the "Bibliothèque Smith-Lesouëf", was occupied by the Bibliothèque nationale de France until the 1980s, when the collections were moved to the central storerooms.
Today, the building houses the books of former residents of the Maison nationale des artistes, as well as a collection of furniture and objets d'art (miniatures, furniture, santons, drawings and sculptures) by Auguste Lesouëf, which will be deposited with the Fondation des Artistes by the Bibliothèque nationale de France in 2019.

The park of the Fondation des Artistes will be exceptionally open on the occasion of the European Heritage Days. Around its 10-hectare park, the Fondation des Artistes brings together an atypical ensemble comprising the Maison nationale des artistes (retirement home for elderly artists), the MABA (art center), some thirty artists' studios and a heritage library, the Smith-Lesouëf library. Today's park is the result of a long history, from the cultivation of vines, through a French garden laid out in terraces and adorned with ponds, to the English garden of the 19th century, transformed at the beginning of the following century.
A family afternoon exploring the Fondation des Artistes park with a treasure hunt. Search for clues and follow the map to discover the stories of the park and its hosts.

Heritage Days 2024 at MABA, the Maison d'Art Bernard Anthonioz
Against the backdrop of the Paris Olympics in 2024, and as part of its season dedicated to graphic design, MABA presents S'print, an exhibition exploring the relationship between graphic design and sport. In a joyful (and sporting!) proliferation, MABA deploys colors, lines and surfaces to show how sport borrows from graphic design, and vice versa. The exhibition brings together a variety of graphic objects: from soccer shirts to posters, from supporters' scarves to tickets, from rackets to reinterpreted basketballs, demonstrating the infiltration of graphics into all sporting disciplines.
3, 2, 1... don't go away, there's going to be some sport!
On this Petit Parcours, families are invited to explore the century-old park and its various trees. Using the senses and focusing on the trees, this visit will be an opportunity to connect with nature and with each other. This walk, supervised by a mediator, will be punctuated by collective and individual actions.
