Summers come and go on public transport in Paris and the Ile-de-France region. In Paris, when the summer months arrive, waiting times on the platforms get longer, and it's often necessary to find an alternative route to get around the capital and the Ile-de-France region. SNCF and RATP usually take advantage of the summer period to undertake major modernization and renovation work, necessary for passenger safety.
While traffic disruptions are announced on the RER A, RER B and RER C, the metro is no exception to the rule. RATP has announced the total closure of metro line 14 for two weeks from July 29.
"As part of the extension of line 14 to Aéroport d'Orly and Saint-Denis Pleyel, the automatic train control system must be modernized on the existing line and deployed on the extended line in order to accommodate 1 million passengers a day by 2024 ", explains the Régie. As a result, line 14 of the Paris metro will be entirely closed, and all day, from Saturday July 29 to Friday August 11, 2023 inclusive.
Prior to this, other work had already disrupted traffic on line 14. In particular, the purple metro line was closed all day on Saturday May 6 and Sunday May 7, Saturday May 27 and Sunday May 28, Saturday June 24 and Sunday June 25, and Saturday July 15 and Sunday July 16, 2023.
This summer, users of line 14 will once again have to adapt and find alternative routes. To reach central Paris from the Olympiades stop, for example, RATP recommends walking to the Nationale metro station, then taking line 6 to Nation, and finally boarding the RER A to Auber-Opéra. Note that RATP is also providing replacement buses between Olympiades and Gare de Lyon.
Further disruptions are expected on line 14 this autumn.
