This is not a first, as firework mortars are regularly banned from sale when the national holiday approaches. This year, however, the circumstances are special, and the ban is linked in particular to the riots following the death of young Nahel at the end of June 2023. Firework mortars had been used in large numbers, and the authorities would like to avoid incidents around July 14th and its festivities. As a result, the sale, carrying and transportation of fireworks by private individuals is formally prohibited throughout France until July 15.
Professionals in the sector, however, are not affected by the decree, which states that"in order to prevent the risk of serious disturbances to public order during the July 14th festivities, the sale, carrying, transport and use of pyrotechnic articles and fireworks are prohibited throughout France until July 15th inclusive". According to Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, July 13 and 14, 2023 are considered"two sensitive days", and"massive measures to protect the French" will be put in place.
