July 14 has been France's national holiday since 1880, when Republican deputies decided to offer the nation a collective celebration. The date was chosen from several proposals, as it corresponds both to the day the Bastille was taken on July 14, 1789, and to the anniversary of the Fête de la Fédération, which celebrated the event 1 year later, on July 14, 1790, and which unfortunately ended tragically.

Almost 150 years later, July 14th is still celebrated in the various communes of France, which often organize events such as military parades, popular balls and fireworks displays, sometimes on July 13th.
While the city of Paris organizes a fine program of festivities on the 14th alone, with a military parade on the Champs-Élysées (exceptionally moved) and a morning flypast followed by fireworks from the Eiffel Tower in the evening, other neighbouring towns prefer to shoot off their fireworks on the 13th. There are a number of reasons for this choice of date, but it's likely that more people will be able to enjoy the fireworks, as the following day is a public holiday.
