Lovers of the Centre Pompidou and contemporary art were shocked to learn that the museum would be closing its doors for five years, from 2025 to 2030, for major renovation work. But the closure of this much-visited venue is having a major impact on its employees, who are likely to lose their jobs during this long period, and are wondering where they will end up until the reopening. Some of the staff have been on strike since October 16 to obtain answers, and have announced that they will continue their strike until January 15, 2024.
The establishment, which has almost a thousand employees, plans to relocate around 480 of them between the Grand Palais, collection storage facilities north of Paris, the library in a building in central Paris and the new hub in Massy due to open in summer 2026. But what about the others, who remain in the dark? According to AFP, the inter-union group spoke of a"breach of trust" with management, after meetings that left employees with no real answer as to their future.
The unions are calling for staff affected by a move during the closure to be "brought together in a single location", along with the collections. While the museum remains open despite the strike, it may close on certain days depending on the scale of the strike, so be sure to check the website before visiting!
