The world of circus and equestrian arts is in mourning... Alexis Gruss, the emblematic figure of the revitalized traditional circus, died on Saturday April 6, 2024 at the age of 79 following a heart attack. Born on April 23, 1944 in Bart, in the Doubs region of France, Alexis Gruss was heir to a line of circus enthusiasts, a family tradition that began in 1868. He was a master equestrian, circus director and musician, recognized by his peers and awarded France's highest honors for his invaluable contribution to the equestrian art and the world of show business.
Alexis Gruss ' career was marked by a bold stylistic break with the traditional circus of the 70s, with the creation of Cirque à l'Ancienne in 1974, in collaboration with actress Silvia Monfort. This initiative was a revolution, emphasizing the predominance of equestrian exercises and subsequently inspiring numerous troupes such as the Théâtre équestre Zingaro and the Théâtre du Centaure. Le Cirque à l'Ancienne, and later Les Folies Gruss, embodied a vision of the circus in which the horse was at the heart of the show, contributing greatly to the renewal and popularity of the circus arts.
Alexis Gruss ' life was also marked by a deep vocation to teaching and passing on his passion for the equestrian arts. His commitment has inspired generations of artists, perpetuating the family legacy and enriching the circus world with an indelible imprint.
A religious ceremony will pay tribute to Alexis Gruss atSaint-Roch church in Paris on Thursday April 11 at 9:30 am, marking the final farewell to this exceptional artist whose life was dedicated to excellence in the equestrian circus arts. In accordance with his last wishes, he will be laid to rest in the privacy of his family.
