There are no sharks in the Seine, yet Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo has already postponed swimming in the river several times, initially scheduled for June 23 and then June 30. At a press conference on Wednesday June 19, she announced that she would indeed keep her promise, with a new date after the Fête Nationale. Three days were proposed, on July 15, 16 or 17, 2024,"depending on the weather", and it will finally be this Wednesday, July 17, at around 8:30 a.m., near the Bras Marie!
This long-anticipated plunge into the Parisian river had been postponed due to heavy rainfall in May, which made the water too dirty for a dip, but also because the flow of the Seine was too great. Then came the results of the European elections and Emmanuel Macron's announcement of the dissolution of the National Assembly, calling for legislative elections, and bathing was no longer a priority for the mayor.
But the swim had to take place before the Paris Olympic Games, during which athletes will be required to swim in the Seine in the triathlon and marathon swimming events. If all conditions are met, the mayor will swim alongside Marc Guillaume, prefect of the Île-de-France region, and Tony Estanguet, before the start of an open-water competition with licensed swimmers.
