Every year, the capital sees the bravest runners take part in the traditional Paris Marathon, but in 2024, it's an Olympic marathon that awaits professional athletes, on the occasion of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Olympic marathon has been around since the first Games of the modern era in 1896, in Athens. And the race is considered so tough that no runner has ever won more than two medals. The 2024 version is likely to be no exception, as the course has just been unveiled, and it's not all plain sailing!
The race will take place on August 10, 2024 for the men and August 11 for the women, on a new and original course that pays tribute toFrench History, between Paris and Versailles, starting from theHôtel de Ville. Olympic athletes will be following in the footsteps of the thousands of women who protested against the flour shortage in front of the Hôtel on October 5, 1789, and angrily set off for Versailles to fetch King Louis XVI. A pivotal period in the history of the French Revolution, since when they returned to Paris with the sovereign and his family, he signed the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. The Olympic Committee wishes to pay tribute to this very first event.
The route will pass through nine communes in the Île-de-France region, including Paris, Boulogne-Billancourt, Sèvres, Ville d'Avray, Versailles, Viroflay, Chaville, Meudon and Issy-les-Moulineaux. The nearly 42-kilometre route is not as flat as it looks, with 436m of ascent and 438m of descent, and a maximum gradient of 13.5%! A marathon that promises to be particularly demanding for athletes!
In the meantime, you can already register for the Paris Marathon 2023!
