On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, the Basilica of Saint-Denis welcomes a new work, Eiréné, by visual artist Sophie Comtet Kouyaté. Conceived as a continuation of the exhibition La Trêve, by the same artist already on show at the Basilica until September 15, Eiréné is a participatory work, designed to be created as and when visitors participate.
With La Trêve, Sophie Comtet Kouyaté took another look at the Olympic Games, using the codes of the ancient Games - partially nude bodies, athleticism and sportswear - and having French athletes pose under her lens in the same way as Dionysiens (inhabitants of Saint-Denis, editor's note). Eiréné is the final piece in this exhibition: from 8pm on July 30, visitors will be able to take part in this work, created by Sophie Comtet Kouyaté, with the participation of young people and residents of Saint-Denis. The aim of Eiréné is to evolve under the gaze of the spectator, but above all, with the participation of visitors: each of them will be able to intervene throughout the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games by placing a word, symbol or signature on this ephemeral monument.
To inaugurate this unique work of art in the heart of the necropolis of the Kings and Queens of France - the Basilica of Saint-Denis, editor's note - a special evening will be held on July 30, with another on September 6 to round things off.
