Paris 2024 Olympics: why did a man isolate himself in a giant bottle near the Stade de France?

Have you seen a giant inhabited bottle on the outskirts of the Stade de France? To mark the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, performance artist Abraham Poincheval isolated himself in his glass cocoon for 10 days, until August 3. Called "La Bouteille", this performance, though totally offbeat, calls for a deeper reflection on today's society ...

Currently on show at the Fondation Louis Vuitton as part of theLVMH Cultural Olympiad, Abraham Poincheval never ceases to surprise... On the outskirts of the Stade de France, at the heart of the Olympic festivities, the intrepid 52-year-old artist offers himself a new, daring and unique performance. Since July 25, 2024, he has taken up residence in an XXL glass bottle, nestled along the Saint-Denis canal. Soberly named "La Bouteille", this contemporary art performance will last ten days, without interruption, until August 3.

Imagine the determination! In his six-by-two-meter glass cocoon, Abraham Poincheval will hear every howl of victory and every sigh of disappointment from the Olympic Games, while questioning our relationship to public space and intimacy. At a time when "many people are putting their lives on social networks", the artist wonders "how we organize our lives, knowing that we are being watched at every moment".

Don't panic, our Robinson 2.0 has thought of everything: food rations, dry toilets, a small wind turbine and solar collectors for a minimum of comfort and electricity! In addition, there's a system of pipes linking the bottle to the shore, allowing passers-by to communicate with the artist. Cool, isn't it?
This amusing experiment is part of an artistic itinerary orchestrated by Plaine Commune, showcasing the Saint-Denis canal.

Used to extreme performances, Abraham has already spent a week enclosed in a sculpture, or suspended on a platform 20 meters above the ground. But this time, he plunges us into a bubble of reflection in the midst of Olympic effervescence.

So, shall we meet at the canal?
