Good news for sports lovers, as the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games are finally here , with an opening ceremony expected on August 28! As with the Olympic Games, this Paralympic opening ceremony will take place outside a stadium. In the meantime, the Paralympic Flame is getting ready to criss-cross the Paris region. Before reaching Paris, the relay will stop off in several towns in the region on Tuesday August 27, with 12 torches being carried.
But why 12 flames? " Unlike the Olympic Flame, several Paralympic Flames can shine simultaneously, a singularity brought about by the Paralympic movement," reads the official Paralympics website. " They will symbolize the energy of the 12 days of the first Summer Paralympic Games in France: the lighting day of the cauldron on August 28, 2024 and the 11 days of competition ," it is explained.
These twelve flames will be landing in the Paris region on August 27, passing through Clichy-sous-Bois, Livry-Gargan and Sevran in Seine-Saint-Denis, Houdan and Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines in Yvelines, Trilport in Seine-et-Marne, La Roche-Guyon in Val-d'Oise, Sucy-en-Brie in Val-de-Marne, Saint-Cloud in Hauts-de-Seine and Grigny in Essonne.
But who are the holders of these Paralympic flames? Who will have the honor of waving one of these flames during the relay this Tuesday, August 27, 2024? The official website of the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games has lifted the veil on the names of some of these famous torchbearers. This Tuesday, those planning to travel to Paris to catch a glimpse of the flames will be able to meet Olivier Donval (Para cycling), Hélios Latchoumanaya (Para judo), Lisa Cez (Para equestrian) and Demba Sidibe (Cécifoot). "Nearly 250 of them will be carrying the Paralympic flames towards the capital that day," says the official website.
