At the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, the Paralympic flag bearer didn't go unnoticed... But who is John McFall, who brought the flag before it was raised? We tell you all about it!

The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, held on August 28 on the Place de la Concorde, left its mark with strong symbolism. Among the highlights was the presence of John McFall, former British Paralympic athlete and first " parastronaut " of theEuropean Space Agency (ESA), who carried the Paralympic flag, symbolizing the union between sporting excellence and space exploration, on this historic evening.

John McFall was not chosen at random for this prestigious role at the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games. A former Paralympic sprinter and bronze medallist at the 2008 Beijing Games, he perfectly embodies the Paralympic movement's values of resilience and surpassing oneself. After losing his right leg in a motorcycle accident at the age of 19, he never gave up, pursuing his dreams with unfailing determination. After becoming a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon, McFall set his sights on another childhood dream:space exploration. An ambition made possible when theESA launched its program to recruit astronauts with disabilities.

In November 2022, at the age of 42, John McFall was selected to joinESA's new class of astronauts, a moment he describes as an " immense opportunity ". Since then, he has been involved in the "Fly!" feasibility study, undergoing a series of rigorous tests to assess the possibility of a space mission for a person with a disability. The initial results have been encouraging, so much so that Jérôme Reineix, who is in charge of the study atESA, declared last July: " At this stage, our work has identified that there are no technical obstacles to flying John McFall on a long-duration mission to the ISS as a fully integrated crew member ", reported our colleagues in Le Parisien.

While theESA remains cautious about announcing an official mission, John McFall is already an inspirational role model for millions of people around the world. His role at this year's opening ceremony has only reinforced his iconic status, and as he himself says: " I'd like to think that my presence at this year's ceremony, in my new role at the European Space Agency, attests to and embodies the success, reach and legacy of the Paralympic movement ". A fine promise for the future of space exploration and for the inclusion of people with disabilities.
