Already, in the French delegation for these Paris 2024 Paralympic Games made up of 257 athletes, there are 14 additional guides with the vocation of accompanying blind athletes, particularly in the para triathlon, para athletics and para cycling disciplines.
These able-bodied athletes, who have been training for years before the competition, have chosen to follow high-level disabled athletes - visually impaired or blind, the only disabilities that allow them to have a guide - to accompany them to international competitions and perform together.
While many of these guides accompany the athletes on a voluntary basis, the Ministry of Sport will be paying bonuses to the guides of bronze, silver and gold medal athletes at these Paralympic Games.
Since Beijing 2008, the Ministry of Sport has been working to ensure equality between Olympic medal winners and Paralympic podium finishers, and will be paying a bonus of €80,000 (for a gold medal), €40,000 (for a silver medal) or €20,000 (for a bronze medal) to guides accompanying medal-winning Paralympic athletes.
