One hundred years ago, thechurch of Saint-Ouen-le-Vieux welcomed athletes to compete in the 1924 Paris Games. Designated as an Olympic athletes' chapel that year, this small, unassuming church was designated again 100 years later, allowing believing athletes taking part in the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games to use this religious venue when they came to Paris.
Built in 832 as a tribute to Saint-Ouen - a royal official for King Dagobert I who later became Bishop of Rouen - who died on this very spot, the chapel later became a church. Overlooking Ile Saint-Denis from Anatole France, where the church is located, the church retains a certain cachet, overlooking the Audonian vines planted on the same spot.
To celebrate the end of the Paris 2024 Games, a mass will be celebrated on Sunday, September 8 at 11am: believers will be able to gather especially for the occasion. Please note, however, that as the church is small, it is advisable to come early to ensure a place. The religious ceremony will also be broadcast live on France 2, starting at 10:30 a.m.
