After being presented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, NanniMoretti 's new film arrives in cinemas this Wednesday, June 28. Il sol dell'avvenire (Towards a Bright Future) is first and foremost the story of a lost director, out of touch with his century. A dinosaur in the world of cinema, faced with the dazzling success of new streaming platforms - a hilarious scene during an exchange with Netflix is particularly memorable - Giovanni's character is forced to rethink his habits in order to survive in the 21st century.
A director who knows how to film love, without knowing how to love: that's the opening line of this film, which we appreciate for its agility and accuracy. Featuring a protagonist in the midst of an existential crisis, somewhat in spite of himself, the film analyzes the need for change, without coming across as an eulogistic " it was better before " tale. Between his young daughter's love affair with a Polish 60-year-old and his wife's inability to leave him, the main character seems totally out of place, leaving us to predict a rather comic bias to these situations.
And that's exactly what happens when, against a backdrop of lively music, you can't help but smile at certain scenes. Nanni Moretti 's aesthetically pleasing staging of this introspective comic-dramatic tale is one of a long list of films that put cinema on stage. It's a touching mise en abyme that lends a real note of lightness, despite its less than cheerful themes. We also appreciate the film's French touch , with the presence of Mathieu Amalric and a number of French musical numbers.
Without falling into stereotypes, Vers un avenir radieux evokes with great finesse and authenticity the ups and downs of life, both private and professional. Between melancholy and tenderness, the film portrays, more than a change, an inevitable adaptation in a fast-changing world where not everyone always finds their place.
