The Stade Charléty, located in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, was born out of the need for a sports arena for the Paris Université Club (PUC), a French omnisports club founded in Paris in 1906, with 65 disciplines. The club, which had to leave its stadium in Vincennes, was allocated the site, then an empty lot. Inaugurated in 1939, it bears the name of the Rector of the University of Paris, Sébastien Charléty, who worked to make it possible for the club to move there.
With the outbreak of the Second World War, the stadium was unable to accommodate the public, but hosted its first major event in 1957, the Paris University Games. With its outdated and dangerous stands, it was demolished at the end of 1989, then rebuilt to become the modern, multi-purpose stadium we know today, with a grass pitch and 8-lane athletics track, right next to the French National Olympic and Sports Committee.
Over the decades, the Charléty stadium has witnessed a host of sporting events, from athletics competitions such as the Meeting de Paris, to soccer matches, as Paris FC, which competes in Ligue 2, is the stadium's resident club. Nearly 20,000 spectators attend these popular and accessible sporting and cultural events. After the Parc des Princes and Stade Jean Bouin, it's one of the biggest stadiums in Paris.
To get to Stade Charléty, take RER line B to Cité universitaire or tramway 3a to Stade Charléty - Porte de Gentilly station.
