The penultimate day of competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and spectators are still not out of surprises as this morning, Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola triumphed over the queen distance (the marathon, ed. note) in just two hours six minutes and twenty-six seconds, setting a new Olympic record despite the very significant gradient on the course.
Followed by Belgian marathoner Bashir Badi, who took silver, and bronze medallist Benson Kipruto, Tamirat Tola became an Olympic marathon legend this morning. On the French side, it was Nicolas Navarro who stood out, the 1st Frenchman to cross the finish line 3 minutes and 30 seconds faster than the Olympic champion, thus achieving his best performance of the season. As a reminder, he finished 12th at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
The second French marathoner,Hassan Chahdi, finished in 20th place, making his first-ever appearance at the Olympic Games in Paris. Tomorrow, Sunday August 11, it's the turn of the women's athletes to take to the start line of this historic course, after amateur runners made it their own all evening during the Marathon pour tous. On the French side, we're counting on our three French marathon runners, Melody Julien, Méline Rollin and Mekdes Woldu.
