This Saturday, August 10, visitors who had booked their free tickets to admire the Olympic cauldron in the Jardin des Tuileries are faced with a closed door. Due to heightened security measures around the Marathon Olympique Homme and Marathon Pour Tous, the Préfecture de Police has decided to close access to the site for the day.
The decision to close was taken to ensure the safety of athletes and spectators throughout the day, marked by two major events of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games: the Men's Olympic Marathon taking place in the morning, and the Marathon Pour Tous, scheduled for the evening.
This last-minute cancellation, while understandable for security reasons, is obviously a disappointment for those who had hoped to see the Olympic flame up close as the competition drew to a close. For visitors, this was one of the last opportunities to see the illuminated cauldron, which will be extinguished at the closing ceremony on Sunday August 11.
After this date, the Olympic cauldron will enter a "sleep" period from August 12 to 27, during which it will neither be lit nor accessible to the public. However, fans will have another chance to see it in action at the Paralympic Games, which will take place from August 29 to September 7, 2024, following the opening ceremony on August 28.
This closure, while receptive to visitors, is necessary to ensure the smooth running of the marathons, which are highlights of these 2024 Olympics. Safety remains an absolute priority in a context where thousands of participants and spectators are expected to take to the streets of Paris.
