Once again, many artists have released a new opus in 2023. Some even produced two, like French rapper Jul. But which artists sold the most records in France last year? And which musical styles came out on top? Find the answers with our ranking of the 200 best-selling albums in France in 2023. A Top 200 list compiled by Snep (the national phonographic publishing union) was unveiled on January 8, 2024.
Unsurprisingly, rap continues to ride the wave of success, with 14 (versus 11 last year) of the places in the Top 20 occupied by rappers. On the top step of the podium is Werenoi. The artist, crowned male revelation of the year at the Cérémonie des Flammes in 2023, is the artist who sold the most albums last year, thanks to the release of his very first opus entitled"Carré".
In the Top 20 best-selling albums in France in 2023, we also find Hamza in second place with his opus"Sincèrement", then Ninho with"NI"(3rd place), followed by Tiakola (4th), SDM ( 5th), JUL (6th and 11th), Djadja & Dinaz (9th), Gazo (10th), Lomepal(12th), Orelsan (13th), Aya Nakamura (14th), Zola ( 15th) and PLK ( 19th).
Also in this ranking are the Enfoirés troupe in 7th position, Florent Pagny in 8th, Italian rock band Måneskin in 16th, American outfit Imagine Dragons in 17th, Vianney in 18th and finally The Rolling Stones in 20th.
This ranking also demonstrates the good health of French productions, since 17 of the top 20 best-selling albums of 2023 are Francophone, and 145 French productions are ranked in the top 200 best-selling albums of 2023, i.e. 73%!
Emerging Francophone artists are also well represented, with 23 debut albums produced in France figuring in this year's top 200 albums.
And what about female artists? Unfortunately, they are once again poorly represented in this annual ranking. Snep reveals thatAya Nakamura is the only female artist in the top 20. On the other hand, the number of female artists has risen since last year, with 36 projects appearing in the 2023 ranking, more than half of them produced in France (57%). Ranked female artists include Zaho de Sagazan, Mentissa, Ronisia and Nej.
Finally, Snep points out that French chanson and pop artists"are enjoying undiminished popular success", with Florent Pagny, Vianney, Indochine, Christophe Maé, Claudio Capéo, Angèle, Clara Luciani, Johnny Halliday, Pierre de Maere, Mylène Farmer, Calogero and Jain in the 2023 ranking.
