Valley Stage, Warzone or Temple Stage... So, which festival do you think we're talking about? Only those with a passion for extreme music will know that it's Hellfest. The legendary French metal festival returns to Clisson, not far from Nantes, from Thursday June 15 to Sunday June 18, 2023, for four explosive days.
On the program? Iron Maiden, Pantera, Kiss, Parkway Drive, Slipknot, Porcupine Tree and Def Leppard... Once again this year, for its 16th edition, Hellfest is pulling out all the stops to satisfy everyone's musical tastes.
In addition to the Hellfest headliners, there are also some surprising and delightful discoveries in store. So, if you're looking to get away from the Mainstages and discover some original and unusual artists, here are 5 offbeat bands you won't want to miss this summer at Hellfest!
Thursday, June 15, 2023 - Warzone / 8:45pm to 9:45pm
Punk / Alternative Rock - France
Ludwig Von 88, a flagship band on the French punk scene, made a comeback in 2016 after an announced split in 1999. After a 17-year break, fans were delighted to see the band back together again, as they always were. Ludwig Von 88 's penchant for humor and mockery is evident in their incredibly festive, theatrical stage shows, where disguises and cover versions are an integral part of the act. A quirky band we're looking forward to seeing again on Thursday June 15 at Hellfest!
Friday, June 16, 2023 - Warzone / 0:45am to 1:45am
Gypsy Punk - Ukraine/USA
If you like a good time, then head to the Warzone on Friday June 16 for a concert by Gogol Bordello. Based on an effective, dynamic gypsy punk style, this American brass band, formed in 1999, gets audiences up on their feet at every performance with its sometimes kitschy but always catchy tunes, led by Ukrainian-born phenomenon Eugene Hütz. With Gogol Bordello, you can be sure of a good time!
Saturday, June 17, 2023 - Temple / From 7.35pm to 8.35pm
Folk Black Metal - Finland
The Finns have this annoying tendency to introduce us to atypical talents. After the famous Lordi, it's time for Finntroll. Hailing from Helsinki, this band has no fewer than 7 albums to its credit. What makes them special? An intelligent blend of folk metal, black metal and death metal with humppa, a Finnish polka. On stage, the musicians don't hesitate to dress up, sporting beautiful troll ears! So, are you ready for a musical journey as surprising as it is unusual? Head for the Temple stage on Saturday June 17.
Saturday, June 17, 2023 - Temple / 9:45pm to 10:45pm
Pagan Folk - Germany
They come to us from Germany with a clever blend of pagan music and neofolk! With Faun, you're guaranteed a space-time journey in search of fairy tales and ancestral legends. If you loved Myrkur's show last year, then Faun is sure to win you over with its spellbinding universe and use of atypical traditional instruments (hurdy-gurdy, Celtic harp, bagpipes, nyckelharpa, bouzouki, flute...).
Saturday, June 17, 2023 - Temple / 11:55pm to 12:55am
Hunnu rock / Folk Metal - Mongolia
Too rare not to mention, The Hu hail from Mongolia, a country best known for its immense steppes, the Gobi Desert and the conqueror Genghis Khan. But since 2019, Mongolia is also known thanks to The Hu. This talented band has taken the metal world by storm with its traditional instruments (Tsuur flute and horse-head fiddle), and its art of Khöömei (throat singing). Now with two albums to their credit, The HU can count on a solid fan base, always impressed by their sincere and powerful performances. To discover this group, recently inscribed by UNESCO on the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, head for the Temple on Saturday evening.
