From March 9 to July 22, 2018, great impressionist painter, Mary Cassatt is to be rediscovered at the Musée Jacquemart-André. This painter born in 1844, who studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia until 1865, moves to Paris to follow the Impressionist movement.
Admitted into the Salon 1868, noticed by Degas at the Salon 1874, Mary Cassatt will later on be invited by Degas to be a member of the Impressionist painters. We owe her many major portraits such as the Little Girl in a Blue Armchair, 1878, rejected for the World Fair, because it was judged radical, social scenes, theater performances, A Corner of the Loge (as known as In The Box), circa 1877-1878 or lake outings, such as 1895 Feeding the Ducks.
This exhibition allows Parisian and foreign visitors to rediscover Mary Cassatt through 50 major works, oils, pastels and engravings, exceptional loans from the greatest American museums, such as Washington National Gallery of Art, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art or the Terra Foundation in Chicago, as well as from other prestigious institutions in France – Musée d’Orsay, Petit Palais, INHA, BnF…
Revolving around 5 sections, the Musée Jacquemart-André exhibition will return on Mary Cassatt’s career and pictorial style: from her debuts in art in the USA, her inspiring trips in Europe, her testing, the critics she received in Salons and the research about the modern woman, these milestones illustrated in paintings accompanied by various document support, will tell all the modernity of her story, the story of an American in Paris.
Rarely showcased, these masterpieces are gathered together for the very first time, and we commend the initiative!
