The Fondation Custodia unveils some of the works included in the First Lugt Collection and presents the “Studi & Schizzi. Drawing the Human Figure in Italy. 1450-1700” exhibition. Over 85 drawings and sketches reveal the work and the endeavor for perfection of the Italian masters. An exhibition to discover from July 7 to September 6, 2020.
Study before making a painting, the drawing reveals a lot of secrets about one does it. The Fondation Custodia lifts the veil on the work methods of many Italian artists from the Renaissance to Baroque. Through 85 drawings displayed, we find the studies, tries and thoughts of great masters like Filippino Lippi, Palma il Giovane, Andrea del Sarto, Barocci and more.
According to Frits Lugt, who created this collection and founded the Fondation Custodia, these drawings are an “involuntary confession”. These sketches show the artist’ quest for beauty, realism and ideal. The exhibition takes us to the look out for the perfect face. To get to such a result, the Italian masters have had to master the delicate art of shadow and light and recreate proportions, emotions and the exact attitudes of their models.
Let yourself be tempted by the Studi & Schizzi exhibition and discover the artists’ experiments that led them to the creation of their greatest masterpieces.
