He has been one of his greatest art influences: Picasso’s touch is widely visible in Yves Saint Laurent’s creations. The musée national Picasso unveils the bonds between the two artists through the “Yves Saint Laurent in museums” exhibition running from January 29 to May 15, 2022. A huge exhibition taking six museums in Paris over, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the very first Yves Saint Laurent show.
The musée national Picasso invites us to the prestigious Salon Jupiter to admire works by two art top dogs: Pablo Picasso and Yves Saint Laurent. The great fashion designer never hid his fascination for the master of cubism, as he drew a lot of inspiration to create his collections. He even devoted his 1979 Fall/Winter collection to the painter: “My collection is based on that specific moment and constructed like a ballet. I worked off of Picasso and a softer form of cubism, harlequins, the Blue Period, the Rose Period, the Tricorne period…”.
The musée national Picasso unveils some of the most famous models of Yves Saint Laurent, displayed with works by Picasso that inspired their creation.
Paintings and haute-couture outfits stand facing one another, like an unspoken dialog between the two artists, internationally appreciated. These two masters shared more than one quality: they both pushed limits and recreated the rules of their arts to impose their inimitable styles.
From his very first shows, Yves Saint Laurent managed to influence French fashion. Always renewing himself, he spent his career playing with conventions, shapes, colors, to provide always surprising and innovative collections.
The “Yves Saint Laurent in Museums” exhibition is deployed in six major Paris museums, each one of them highlighting an aspect of the designer’s universe and character. Meet at the Centre Pompidou, the Musée national Picasso, the Museum of Modern Art, the Louvre and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum to discover the rest of the exhibition.
