In early April, head to the 5th arrondissement for the Journées européennes des métiers d'art! During this 17th edition, nearly 500 events are being organized in Paris and the Île-de-France region, to introduce the general public to exceptional crafts and know-how. Are you a lover of fine books? Then a visit to theAtelier des Bernardins is for you, to get a glimpse of traditional bookbinding and gilding techniques in a historic building.
Formerly located in the great Bernardins convent, the workshop of the same name has been home to numerous bookbinders since 1860. Some of the tools used in those days are still in daily use, including the "massicot", created by Guillaume Massiquot in the mid-19th century. And since then, thousands of antique books have passed through the hands of exceptional craftsmen to be repaired, covered, embellished and cared for. On April 1 and 2, 2023, take advantage of this century-old knowledge and discover their latest creations, admiring the materials used, from leather to canvas and marbled paper.
Don't miss this wonderful visit, and take advantage of the other events organized throughout JEMA 2023!
