Contemporary art lovers love her. Chiharu Shiota is back in Paris with a soloexhibition that is likely to gather many enthusiasts. On view from May 24 to July 22, 2023, this installation entitled " Memory Under The Skin " takes over the Galerie Templon Grenier Saint-Lazare in the 3rd arrondissement to offer visitors a unique and fascinating artistic experience focused on human existence.
Imagine a spellbinding journey through an incredible woven installation, in situ, and a set of new thread sculptures. With " Memory Under The Skin ", artist Chiharu Shiota returns to one of her favorite themes: clothing"as a second skin". This one can, according to her, be more important than a skin since"it offers the possibility to express so much about each of us".
As a counterpoint, Chiharu Shiota also experiments with more permanent materials by recreating, in plaster and then bronze, the hands of her husband, her daughter, not to mention her own. This new work, described as"subtly figurative", made of bronze and metal wires, thus embodies an original approach to sculpture.
Through this new installation, Chiharu Shiota plays once again with wires, but also with forms. Taking full advantage of the two levels of the Templon gallery, the artist takes us into his bewitching and poetic universe, with mystical, even dark creations, like this very beautiful tentacular work made only from black cords, to be admired in the basement. We also love his paintings and drawings exhibited at the gallery, again featuring red, black and thread.
As a reminder, Chiharu Shiota is known worldwide. Born in Osaka, Japan in 1972, she has been living in Berlin for more than two decades. With exhibitions around the world (New York, Espoo, Tokyo, Kyoto, Jakarta, Bangkok, Zurich ...), the Japanese artist fascinates and challenges with his installations of red threads intertwined. Very dear to the Japanese artist, the red thread represents for her a material at the same time dreamlike, organic and intellectual. Chiharu Shiota uses it to give shape to her immersive and paradoxical architectures.
Through her various works, the artist who represented Japan in 2015 at the Venice Biennale invites us to reflect on the notions of existence and transcendence.
In 2017, Chiharu Shiota invested the Bon Marché Rive Gauche with a monumental installation. In the spring of 2022, the Guimet Museum offered Chiharu Shiota carte blanche. She unveiled a new work, imagined during the confinement.
This year, Chiharu Shiota returns to Paris, and more precisely to the Templon Grenier Saint-Lazare Gallery - which has represented her since 2011 - with her exhibition " Memory Under The Skin " which is likely to bring together many curious people and contemporary art lovers. And as the entrance is free, you would be really wrong to miss it! See you from May 24 to July 22, 2023 to discover this new installation by Chiharu Shiota in Paris. A favorite!
