This autumn 2023, the Musée de la Gendarmerie Nationale is offering two new temporary exhibitions, in addition to its usual range. In the heart of Melun, the Republican Guard is highlighted, and in particular the craftsmen who work for the renown of this gendarmerie corps. From cavalry and brass bands to saddlery, armory and even period costumes, you'll plunge into the history of those who have made it so important over the years. The second exhibition explores the gendarmes' relationship with sport, a year ahead of the Olympic Games.
Choose between two exciting exhibitions to explore the heritage of this French armed force, which has existed since the Middle Ages. Discover the missions, daily life and resources allocated to the Gendarmerie in the permanent exhibition, before exploring those available only until January 2024. " Jusqu'au bout de l'effort" illustrates the constant presence of sport in the lives of gendarmes, whose shared values include surpassing oneself, courage, team spirit and patriotism. There are many military sports competitions, which you can learn more about at this exhibition.
If you prefer handicrafts, take a look at the Republican Guard's drum, maned helmets and other traditional objects, worn for centuries by this unique and exceptional branch of the national gendarmerie, on horseback. To enable them to carry out their missions, men and women, craftsmen and artists, work behind the scenes, and you'll discover their meticulous, unusual and highly diversified work.
