Some still remember Patti Smith 's two incredible concerts at the Grand Rex in October 2021, as well as her fine performances with the Soundwalk Collective at the Centre Pompidou in 2022. Many are now eagerly awaiting the return of the punk priestess to a Parisian stage. As for live performances, we'll have to wait a little longer. On the other hand, Patti Smith is making her return to the capital she loves so much, with a brand-new exhibition at the Galerie Gallimard from September 5 to October 7, 2023.
And it's no coincidence that this free exhibition is taking place in this famous gallery in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. On September 28, 2023, Patti Smith is due to publish two books with Gallimard. A great admirer of the poet Arthur Rimbaud, Patti Smith accompanies the full text of " Une saison en enfer " (1873) with photographs, drawings and writings.
Another and second book published by Gallimard? " Un livre de jours" (A Book of Days ), a photographic account of a year in the life of Patti Smith, inspired by her Instagram account. Fans of the New York artist who follow her on this social network are bound to be familiar with these daily snapshots of the singer or from her personal collection. They all reveal her inspirations, her works, her objects, and the artists and places that are dear to her.
For around a month, Galerie Gallimard will be exhibiting a series of photographs, drawings and writings reproduced in " A Season in Hell " , as well as some 50 Polaroids by the American artist from " A Book of Days ". Displayed in chronological order, these polaroids are accompanied by the artist's own amusing and sometimes touching anecdotes. They include well-known faces such as Yoko Ono, singer Nico and Kurt Cobain, as well as his daughter, Jesse Smith, in Rome, his Italian cowboy boots, and the legendary photo of Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe, taken on Coney Island on September 1, 1969 and used as the cover of his sublime book " Just Kids ".
To discover them, visit the Galerie Gallimard from September 5 to October 7, 2023. Patti Smith, the high priestess of punk, is also known for her many best-selling books, including " Just Kids ", " Mr. Train ", " Dévotion " and, more recently, " L'année du singe ".
For fans of her work, Patti Smith will be signing her new book " Une saison en enfer " (Collection"Grande Blanche illustrée", éditions Gallimard) at the Gallimard bookshop on Friday, September 29. Then, on October 2, the American artist will give a literary performance at the Théâtre de l'Odéon, based on her other work, " Un livre de jours " . That evening, she will be joined by musicians Tony Shanahan and Jackson Smith.
