It's the event of theyear 2024 in France and in Paris: the arrival of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the capital, exactly 100 years after their predecessors. Since the Athens Olympics in 1896, 33 events have taken place, every four years, sometimes prevented by the global context, sometimes marred by crises. This exhibition, presented by the Palais de la Porte Dorée from April 26 to September 8, 2024, traces thehistory of the Games, behind the scenes and in the making, over the past 130 years!
To become the Games we know today, these Olympiads had to transform themselves and adapt socially and culturally, by modernizing. In this fascinating and comprehensive chronological tour, you can discover each of the Olympiads, even those that didn't take place because of world wars, or were affected by external events.
Nearly 400 works, documents, archive films and photographs recount the struggles of leading sports figures, men and women to make the Games more egalitarian and inclusive, over the decades, from the arrival of women, aboriginals and people with disabilities at the Olympics.
Witness the birth ofmodern Olympism and question the future of the Games with mediation workshops, so that you too can reflect on their future, to make them more open and accessible, following the recent integration of new sports, the consideration of athletes' mental health or eco-responsibility. Since the end of the 19th century, the Olympic Games have been a reflection of the world and its evolutions, and this fascinating exhibition is yours to discover!
