Art knows no borders: come and meet the artists of Benin, and discover the culture and history of this West African country, by admiring the exhibition Révélation! Contemporary Art from Benin, from October 4, 2024 to January 5, 2025, at the Conciergerie de Paris.
The Parisian landmark is home to over a hundred works by 48 contemporary artists from Benin. Photographs, painting, sculpture, video, installations, drawings, performances, design, fashion... All the richness and variety of Benin's contemporary scene is revealed in this exhibition. Some pieces have even been created especially for the occasion.
This artistic journey offers an overview ofcontemporary art in Benin, its history and influences, and the bridges that can be built between France and the African country.
The exhibition is divided into three chapters. With"Goddesses and Gods", we admire the culture and mythology of the Vodun cult, the metamorphosis of divinities that marks this voodoo religion. We then move on to the Queens and Kings, the representation of the power and glory of Abomey's power, and the traditions that have shaped the country. Then we come to women and men, contemporary beings, those who bring life to Benin today and who are affected by this globalized world, where cultures fade and blend.
Between past and present, between traditions and new practices, contemporary artists from Benin tell us about their country in this groundbreaking exhibition.
