The Gospel according to Matthew by Pier Paolo Pasolini as you've never seen it before! The Italian Cultural Institute invites you to discover the exhibition"Domenico Notarangelo: Pasolini in Matera", from September 24 to November 2, 2024. This exhibition highlights 35 rare photographs captured by Domenico Notarangelo, documenting the filming of The Gospel According to Matthew, shot in Matera in 1964. An opportunity to go behind the scenes of a cinematic work revealed through the intimate eye of Domenico Notarangelo.
The interest of this exhibition lies in the unprecedented aspect of the photographs. Far more than mere photographs, these images offer a direct immersion in Pier Paolo Pasolini's creative process. Domenico Notarangelo succeeded in capturing the very essence of the shoot, immortalizing moments of pure emotion and complicity between the director and his actors. Pasolini, always concerned with authenticity, entrusted the photographer with the task of recruiting Matera residents to star in his film, making these photographs all the more significant. As Giuseppe Notarangelo, son of the photographer and curator of the exhibition, points out,"this visual corpus is a precious testimony to the history of cinema".
In addition to photography, theexhibition also includes contemporary works by Giuseppe Palumbo, Valentina Mir and Silvio Cadelo, offering an artistic dialogue around Pasolini's visual legacy. Please note that the opening, which takes place this September 23, will be followed by the screening of the film L'Évangile selon Matthieu at 7:30 pm, a film in which these clichés find a very special resonance. A true plunge into the universe of two great artists in dialogue.
